    A comparison study of the blower door and novel pulse technique on measuring enclosure airtightness in a controlled environment

    This paper introduces a comparison study of measuring the airtightness of a house sized test chamber using the novel pulse technique and the standard blower door method in a controlled environment. Eight different testing plates have been applied to the improvised envelope of the chamber to establish different leakage characteristics. Each testing plate has a unique opening in the centre of the plate, achieved by obtaining a different combination of shape and thickness of the opening. By using the controlled environment, the vagaries of the natural condition when testing within buildings have been reduced providing a more robust testing environment. This investigation focuses on how the air leakage rate calculated from the measurements made by both techniques compare with each other. Comparable results (within 3 %) under most scenarios have been obtained. Additionally, other aspects such as usability of the equipment used for the pulse testing have also been appraised

    Quantification of Cellular Proliferation in Acne Using the Monoclonal Antibody Ki-67

    The mechanism by which ductal hypercornification occurs in acne is uncertain. We investigated proliferation in normal and acne follicles and in the interfollicular epidermis using the monoclonal antibody Ki-67, which reacts with a nuclear antigen expressed by cells in the G1, S, M, and G2 phases of the cell cycle. Cryostat sections of biopsies from the interscapular region from acne patients and from normal volunteers were stained with Ki-67 antibody and counterstained with 2% methyl green. The number of Ki-67-positive nuclei in the basal layer were counted and expressed as a percentage of the total number of basal nuclei in the ductal or interfollicular epithelia. The data was expressed as mean percent ± SD. In normal follicles from acne-affected sites 17.40% ± 1.86% (n = 8) of the nuclei were Ki-67 positive. This was significantly higher (p <0.01) than follicles from an area of skin unaffected by acne (11.01% ± 6.16%, n = 8). In the follicular epithelia of non-inflamed lesions, the percentage of Ki-67 positive nuclei was 23.44% ± 8.36% (n = 15). It was impossible to count the nuclei of follicular epithelium of inflamed lesions because little of this remained intact. In normal interfollicular epidermis, Ki-67-positive nuclei represented 5.33% ± 3.36% (n = 8) of the total. This value was not significantly different from the value obtained for interfollicular epidermis near non-inflamed lesions (10.46% ± 4.45%, n = 15). However, the number of Ki- 67-positive nuclei in the interfollicular epidermis near inflamed lesions was significantly higher than either of these two values: 25.26% ± 6.83%, n = 13, p < 0.05. Our results with Ki-67 confirm that ductal hyperproliferation occurs in acne and shows that normal follicles from acne skin may be “acne-prone.

    Soil Moisture Regime and Mound Position Effects on Soil Water and Vegetation in a Native Tallgrass Prairie in the Mid-Southern United States of America

    Prairie mounds are unique soil surface features that will become increasingly scarce as native tallgrass prairies are continually lost. This study aimed to evaluate (i) whether the soil moisture regime (SMR), mound position, and soil depth affect soil volumetric water content (VWC) and (ii) whether the SMR and mound position affect vegetation over time. Soil VWC was measured continuously from April 2017 to June 2018, and vegetation was sampled in June and August 2017 and in May and August 2018. Maximum VWC for selected rainfall events was ~ 2.5 times greater at 10 cm in the aquic inter-mound than the udic mound position at 30 cm. Soil dry-down rates were four times greater in the udic soil at 10 cm than the aquic soil at 30 cm. Aboveground plant biomass was numerically largest (8489 kg ha−1) at the aquic summit in August 2018 and smallest (1280 kg ha−1) at the aquic inter-mound in May 2018. Results clearly demonstrate the effects that prairie mound topography and differing SMRs have on soil water dynamics and prairie vegetation and suggest that management efforts need to account for mound topography and SMR in order to be most successful

    Numerical and experimental validations of the theoretical basis for a nozzle based pulse technique for determining building airtightness

    Motivated by intentions of avoiding large net fluid flow and enabling a more practical airtightness test for large buildings, a low-pressure Pulse pressurisation technique was developed for measuring building airtightness at pressures that are considered more representative of that experienced by buildings under natural conditions. Due to the short and dynamic operation, this technique is able to minimize wind and buoyancy effects during the measurement of building pressure. The investigation, based on the “quasi-steady” temporal inertia model, explores a technique that generates a pressure pulse inside a building by releasing a known amount of air pulse over 1.5 s using a compressed air tank. The volumetric flow rate of the air pulse released from the tank is obtained by measuring the transient pressure in the air tank during a test run. The air leakage through the building envelope is then obtained by accounting for the compressibility of indoor air. Simultaneously, the pressure variation within the envelope of test building is monitored. Therefore, the leakage-pressure relationship of the building envelope can be obtained. The validity of the theoretical model and the assumptions on which the model is based are validated using experimental and numerical investigations

    Use of the Corail stem for revision total hip arthroplasty: Evaluation of clinical outcomes and cost

Background: With the growing number of total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures performed, revision surgery is also proportionately increasing, resulting in greater health care expenditures. The purpose of this study was to assess clinical outcomes and cost when using a collared, fully hydroxyapatite-coated primary femoral stem for revision THA compared to commonly used revision femoral stems. Methods: We retrospectively identifed patients who underwent revision THA with a primary stem between 2011 and 2016 and matched them on demographic variables and reason for revision to a similar cohort who underwent revision THA. We extracted operative data and information on in-hospital resource use from the patients\u27 charts to calculate average cost per procedure. Patient-reported outcomes were recorded preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. Results: We included 20 patients in our analysis, of whom 10 received a primary stem and 10, a typical revision stem. There were no signifcant between-group differences in mean Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score, Harris Hip Score, 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) Mental Composite Scale score or Physical Composite Scale score at 1 year. Operative time was signifcantly shorter and total cost was signifcantly lower (mean difference -3707.64, 95% confdence interval -5532.85 to -1882.43) with a primary stem than with other revision femoral stems. Conclusion: We found similar clinical outcomes and signifcant institutional cost savings with a primary femoral stem in revision THA. This suggests a role for a primary femoral stem such as a collared, fully hydroxyapatite-coated stem for revision THA
